.........A BETTER WAY TO study FASHION

Rowena Luke-King is a fashion and textile designer with qualified teacher status. She has taught at numerous institutions including Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design, London College of Fashion, University of Brighton, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in India.

Based in the heart of Central London; three minutes from Holborn tube station, she offers executive consultations and expert individual tuition in fashion related subjects including fashion design, textile design, accessory design, pattern cutting and portfolio presentation. She teaches short professional courses at Central Saint Martins; Couture Bridalwear, Embroidery, Hand Sewing For Couture & Bespoke Fashion, and offers occasional pop-up courses such as Shopping For Fabrics In London. She specialises in supporting students who are dyslexic, prepares would-be designers for interview and plans study programs for those looking for an alternative to university education.

People who study with Rowena benefit from her growing network of contacts, her in-depth knowledge of the work place and her diverse range of experiences as both studio and free-lance designer. Many have gained places at their 'first choice' university, gone on to work in fashion, textiles or accessory design, set up their own businesses and in some cases have become employers themselves.

"After a year on Foundation at Central Saint Martins I failed to secure a place on their BA in Fashion. I took a year out to travel and on my return started lessons in portfolio development with Rowena Luke-King. With Rowena's help and consistant enthusiasm I regained my confidence, produced a new portfolio that I was really proud to show, applied to Saint Martins again and gained a place on the BA in Fashion Design with Knitwear. Rowena motivated and inspired me when I had lost all hope of a career in fashion". Kelly Townsend; Creative Director, Paper London.

.........FOCUSED ON KEY SKILLS

Whether you are applying for an art foundation, a degree in fashion and textiles or looking for work in fashion, textiles or accessory design, it is essential to have a memorable and up-to-date portfolio that showcases your full potential. The content and presentation of your portfolio will depend on what doors you would like it to open and whilst you may be able to assess this for yourself, constructive consultations and project planning with an expert will give you the best possible chance of achieving your goal.

Individual tuition in portfolio development will afford you the undivided attention of your tutor, allow you to focus on your own specific study needs and give you an opportunity to learn new skills and reach a high level of expertise in your own time. Available in all subjects featured on this website, your personalised study plan can be designed to introduce you to a combination of disciplines. Offered in blocks of five three-hour sessions, you will be advised on avenues of college or job application, have access to on-line advice between lessons; pre- and post-interview support by telephone.

Before committing to a five lesson block of individual tuition you must first attend two three-hour consultations. These consultations can take the form of portfolio reviews or lessons in which you learn a new skill. They will give you a chance to get to know how Rowena teaches, discuss with her and decide on what career path to take and draw up a plan of how best to proceed. Depending on how much work you already have, one or two consultations may be enough, but should you wish to study in a series of five lesson blocks you will be set a project to work on between consultations one and two.

.........ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

" I was really excited when I started my degree but my enthusiasm was quickly shattered by the negativity of my tutors and their apparent lack of passion for the subjects that they were teaching. Whilst looking for short courses to substitute the lack of skill based tuition, I stumbled across Embroidery Level 1 at CSM. At that time the course was fully booked but I followed the link to Rowena's website and was so impressed by her resumé that I decided to contact her directly. After just one consultation Rowena my confidence significantly improved. She helped me to first recognise, and then develop skills that I already had, introduced me to new skills and encouraged me to get tested for dyslexia so that I could access the university support that I was entitled to. With her encouragement I applied for and was offered a short internship in the Women's Workroom at the Royal Opera House, a part-time internship on Saville Row and free-lance work in the costume department at Pinewood Studios. With the support of her dedicated and honest teaching I managed to complete and pass my degree and if I could have changed anything, it would be to have found her sooner". Claire Reed.
