.........HAND-KNIT & STITCH FOR BEGINNERS

.........HAND-KNIT & STITCH FOR BEGINNERS

HAND-KNIT AND STITCH FOR BEGINNERS. During this course you will be taught how to hand-knit whilst experimenting with the different styles of embroidery used when embroidering on knits, as you make and embellish a series of blanket squares, knitted flowers and a pair of fingerless gloves and/or mittens.

Starting with simple knit and purl combinations such as garter stitch, stocking stitch, moss stitch and rib you will learn how to cast-on and cast-off your stitches, and progress in your own time to more complicated patterns such as cable, bobble and knitted smocking. You will learn how to change colours as you knit; increase and decrease your stitches to create shape, and use mattress stitch to sew your final pieces together.

As you learn how to knit you will be introduced to swiss-darning, which is used to give the appearance of a picture knit, with knit-look stitches in contrasting colours stitched on top rather than knitted into your work. You will experiment with cross stitch, blanket stitch, French knots and lazy daisies; padded satin stitch and embroidered smocking. You will learn how to plan a design and embroider through canvas and add trims such as fringes, crochet borders and pom-poms.

Equipment and materials will be provided with easy to follow two-needle knitting patterns for patchwork squares, knitted flowers, fingerless gloves and/or mittens. Those who wish to create swatches for a textile design portfolio may do so. Others may wish to up-cycle/embroider a favourite cardigan or jumper. No Previous experience is needed.

Price: £375.00 for five, five-hour lessons with a maximum of five students (one place left).
Equipment and materials are included.

Dates: Five alternate Sundays starting on Sunday 21st January 2018; (21st Jan, 4th & 18th Feb, 4th & 18th March).

.........embroidered needlepoint purses

EMBROIDERED NEEDLEPOINT PURSES. During this course you will be introduced to different styles of traditional needlepoint including Florentine, Berlin and Plush Work as you design, embroider and make two small coin purses; one zipped and one with a kiss-clasp frame.

Starting with a simple Petit Point, the most commonly used needlepoint stitch, you will experiment with a selection of canvases and tapestry threads as you progress to more complicated techniques such as Mosaic, Parisian and Renaissance Stitch. You will learn how to create raised velvety surfaces with Loop Stitch, use Tent Stitch to attach beads for Victorian Beadpoint and add Shisha mirrors for a more eclectic 'on trend' look. Whilst using graph paper and transfer papers to pre-plan your embroidery designs, you will learn how to use the colour wheel as you choose your threads and start work on your final needlepoint pieces.

Equipment and materials will be provided with paper patterns drafted to fit the specifications of each purse style. You will learn how to engineer your embroidery designs to fit these purse patterns, block and steam your work back into shape once embroidered; stitch your purse fabrics together by hand and insert linings before attaching a zip to one and a kiss-clasp frame to the other. Those who wish to work on samples for a textile design portfolio may do so. Others may choose to develop their embroideries into small heirloom cushion covers. No Previous experience is needed.
