EMBROIDERED WHITEWORK FOR FASHION

Designed for people who already have competent hand embroidery skills, during this course you will create a reference book of techniques and stitches developed throughout history and across the globe to make precious, heirloom items such as a brides trousseau or a christening robe.

Vintage needle-woven lace with Tenerife wheels.

You will be introduced to needle-weaving, withdrawn-thread and insertion stitches as you experiment with combinations of white fabrics and threads; learn how to dye with tea and coffee to match tints of white; how to design and embroider within a specific garment shape and how to set-up and work on a small 'slate-frame'. You will embroider and appliqué velvet; add warmth with hand-quilting and use more advanced raised stitches to create relief and opaque areas on transparent fabrics such as organdie and organza.

As a feature of this course you will be shown how to make an embroidered draw-string purse for bridal-wear but if you prefer to work on a group of fashion textile designs for your portfolio, you may do so.

EMBROIDERED NEEDLEPOINT PURSES. During this course you will be introduced to different styles of traditional needlepoint including Florentine, Berlin and Plush Work as you design, embroider and make two small coin purses; one zipped and one with a kiss-clasp frame.

Needlepoint roses for framed coin purse by Rowena Luke-King.
You may like to follow the Pinterest inspiration board for this course.

Starting with a simple Petit Point, the most commonly used needlepoint stitch, you will experiment with a selection of canvases and tapestry threads as you progress to more complicated techniques such as Mosaic, Parisian and Renaissance Stitch. You will learn how to create raised velvety surfaces with Loop Stitch, use Tent Stitch to attach beads for Victorian Beadpoint and add Shisha mirrors for a more eclectic 'on trend' look. Whilst using graph paper and transfer papers to pre-plan your embroidery designs, you will learn how to use the colour wheel as you choose your threads and start work on your final needlepoint pieces.

Equipment and materials will be provided with paper patterns drafted to fit the specifications of each purse style. You will learn how to engineer your embroidery designs to fit these purse patterns, block and steam your work back into shape once embroidered; stitch your purse fabrics together by hand and insert linings before attaching a zip to one and a kiss-clasp frame to the other. Those who wish to work on samples for a textile design portfolio may do so. Others may choose to develop their embroideries into small heirloom cushion covers. No Previous experience is needed.

Dates: Four-day weekend; 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd April. Maximum four students (2 places left).
Lessons start at 10.30am and finish at 5.15 pm allowing for a 30 minute lunch break.

Price: £375.00 including equipment and materials.
